D.I.Y. Magic - Anthony Alvarado

I hope in reading this, that you will discover magic in life and how it can reveal truths that you have known deeply within yourself for eons. The following are notes and insights inspired from the book, "D.I.Y. Magic" by the author Anthony Alvarado. This blog post is a collection of sections that I took to be important for me out of this book.

My notes on the highlights:

What is magic?

Magic is the gaining of insight. It is the eventual seeing or experiencing of something that has been there all along through methods such as bibliomancy, divination, ornithomancy, scrying, meditation, intuition, and so on.

How to create or discover magic?

There are many ways to achieve and to explore magic within your life. Some of these ways can be understood with the following synonyms: technique, experiment, exercise, spell, practice, and so on. It is like tossing a handful of dust onto an invisible structure allowing you to finally see the anatomy and to put it to proper use.

Below are just a few ways to find and create magic in your life. I invite you to try out each practice, tweak them to your liking, and to come up with your own. Magic is everywhere if only you know how to notice.

~

Place your digital devices on "Do Not Disturb" or "Airplane Mode" for one full day each week. This will exponentially boost your life experience. Notice your impulses, explore your surroundings.

~

Practice automatic writing each morning. Everyday, ritualistically, fill out one full page with stream-of-thought content. Let the ideas flow onto paper with whatever comes to mind. "I don't know what to write" or "this seems silly" are great places to start. Keep maniacal repetition every morning and watch as the mind explores itself.

~

Watch birds in their patterns and paths. This is a form of meditation or ornithomancy. This can be a very powerful dip into intuition. Watch as hidden truths reveal themselves from within; some may call them omens.

~

Meditate. Not to be confused with the idea that this means to empty the mind, nor does it mean that you will be thinking with your eyes closed for a certain amount of time. Meditation is noticing what comes up into awareness as you keep your attention on an anchor. An anchor can be your breathing, a flame, or a mantra. The things that come up include thoughts, emotions, sensations, and sense perceptions. Meditation is the act of knowing when the mind has become distracted, gotten tangled elsewhere, or when it begins to label and tell stories about these thoughts, emotions, sensations, and sense perceptions. When this knowing of a divergence becomes acknowledged, you can reclaim your attention toward your anchor. The cycle of diversion and reclamation is meditation. Practice this in everything you do. Can you keep your attention present? What do you notice you are gaining from this? Magic.

~

Yoga. Master simple poses such as downward dog, cobra, upward salute, and child's pose. This is not to be only taken as a form of physical activity. Yoga is a very potent method toward reaching states of oneness with life.

~

Become an oneironaut: a person who explores dream worlds. This should be a way of exploring the waking world firstly by frequently asking yourself if you are dreaming. This will build a habit that you will eventually learn to bring into your dream-state. Once you begin to practice exploring life in this way it will present itself to you in a dream. You will then become aware that you are dreaming. Watch the magic unfold and notice that life is only just another layer of a dream.

~

Do not dismiss your impulses. Instead follow them consciously and take your imagination seriously. Remain alert as you playfully watch where your intuition goes.

~

Understand the greatest poetry by using homolinguistic translation. This means to translate from English to English, substituting each word, line, sentence, phrase, and eventually the entire poem into an entirely new perspective of the same abstraction. Not only will you have created an original work of literature yourself, but you will also develop a deeper comprehension of the magic in the original piece.

~

Take frequent walks. This is a way to be more fully human. Magic.

~

Get comfortable with and use the mantra "this, too, shall pass". It will reveal to you the fleetingness of this sliver of life called the present moment. No joy can be kept or held onto and no pain will last. Both, and what lies between them, are all sacred. Remain present with the magic that is the here and the now but know deeply the truth in the mantra "this, too, shall pass".

~

Read. This is the sole means by which we slip involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's mind, skin, voice, or soul. Read, knowing you are dipping your toes into the depth of someone else. In doing so you are becoming aligned more fully with yourself.

~

Write. This is the sole means by which you invite another to slip into your own mind, skin, voice, or soul. Write, knowing you are opening a door for another to step through so that they can discover the depth of you. In doing so you are not only becoming aligned more fully with yourself, you are allowing the world the contingency to become more fully aligned with you and itself.

~

Become aware of how deeply you have grown into being linguistically programmed to perceive the world. Watch as the mind automatically forces a label onto everything and all the stuff of life. You have constructed your own individual illusion of the world through neurolinguistic programming that has been pounded into you by your environment, upbringing, and surrounding culture. It isn't "bad" or "good", those would be more labels. It just is, as is everything and all the stuff of life. Becoming aware of this deeply rooted persuasive condition brings about an awakening. This is possibly the greatest magic of all, in fact, it is what all magic stems from and points to.

~

What is magic?

Magic is the gaining of insight. It is what reveals itself when you become more and more deeply rooted in the present moment.

How to create or discover magic?

You already have. Ask yourself the question "who am I?" and when the mind answers it, ask the question "who am I?" again. You will find that you are not a mind-made idea. You will find that who you are, IS the present moment.
